If I could change one thing about the U.S. federal government, it would be an increase in discourse between Democrats and Republicans. This is because whenever the opposite party comes into power they usually reverse any actions done by the previous party. In the case of a divided government little progress is done as neither government wants to agree with the other. This causes waste of money and resources which is bad for everyone. According to the New York Times, the Trump Administration reversed over 100 environmental rules set in place by the previous government (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/climate/trump-environment-rollbacks-list.html). Similarly, according to CNN, twenty-four of the first sixty-four actions President Biden signed were reversals (https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2021/politics/biden-executive-orders/). By compromising on issues and coming up with new solutions, both parties can get what they want quicker.

If I could change one thing about the federal government, I would change the amount of terms a president could serve from two to one. The point of having a democracy is for the government to be elected by the people. However, according to thefulcrum.us, there is a "four year crutch". The four year crutch is factors that lead to bias such as media and disinformation that give presidents an advantage when pursuing reelection. This leads to voters not voting or nonvoters justifying choosing not to vote because of the likelihood of their reelection. It would be more evident that the presidents are chosen by the people if they only served one term, because there would be no bias against who is elected next.

If I could change one thing about the US government, it would be to establish a stamp on someone's voting registration that said if they were educated or not. According to pewreasearch.org, only 36% of voters have a 4 year college degree or more. This means that 64% of voters haven't even completed an education beyond high school. As a high school student myself I know that a majority of those around me and myself including are not fit to vote for the president of the United States. Our government should be smart and efficient to keep things stable, and having smart voters is a large factor. Uneducated voters could be influenced easy because of their lack of knowledge in politics. I think that with this stamp, the educated voters can be weighed a little more in the elections. I am not saying let the rich rule the country, but I am saying that those who are a little less educated may not know what's best for the country.

I agree with Devin's response, I have also asked myself why do we continue with the electoral collage voting system. I also understand that it is implemented to have a majority ruling. However, I think as we move forward we should shift to the popular vote for voting for president. Like Devin said sometimes the popular vote will win, but not the state ruling. I think Texas is a great example of this. Despite having Texas's main urbanized city's continually vote blue the state remains republican due to rule areas voting. It makes it feel hard for your voice to feel advocated for both party's due to this overall state points system.

If I could change one thing about the federal government, I would remove the electoral college. Although the electoral college makes elections clean and gives representation to smaller states, the electoral college is extremely uneven and doesn't always represent the genuine vote of the USA. For example, according to the New York Times( https://www.nytimes.com/explain/2022/electoral-college-elections#can-a-president-lose-the-popular-vote-but-still-win-the-election , the president of the USA is decided based on the electoral college votes, not the actual national popular vote. This has happened for 2 elections in the past 20 years, once during the 2016 election, and again during the 2000 election. Although we think the United States is a democracy, the presence of the electoral college makes it a republic because the people's opinion aren't directly represented they are unevenly represented during elections.

If I could change one thing about the U.S Federal Government it would be making an age limit for the President. The constitution says that to become the president, one must be 35 years or older. This is a good age, however I believe there should be an age limit because of the amount of power a president holds, people who are over 70 years old begin to slow down and gain more medical issues. 58% of Americans agree that there should be a maximum age limit for elected officials (https://today.yougov.com/topics/politics/articles-reports/2022/01/19/elected-officials-maximum-age-limit-poll). Being the president comes with a lot of responsibility, perhaps having a younger person in the position would bring benefits.

If there was one thing I could change in the federal government, I would implement stricter laws around gun and firearm possessions. Each day, approximately 500 people die due to gun violence alone (1). As seen in previous years, mass shootings, especially within schools are becoming increasingly common. In order to protect our population, the best solution to gun violence is making it more difficult for civilians, who do necessarily need access to firearms, to buy guns.

Although, our goverment is supposed to take care of its people, many of their actions do not reflect this. To exemplify this statement, Our country is dying to the hands obesity.

One thing i would change in the US government would be the implementation of a law that tracks/proves where and how tax money is spent. At the moment, there is no receipt for tax money for the general public, which leads to distrust in the government, and no way to prove that someone has or has not pocketed part of the money for themselves. If this law was to be put in effect, it would lead to more trust in the government, and more honest politicians. (of course this law would never happen because the people who potentially would take the money would have to pass the act/law.)
