Social media has had quite a big impact on the world today and I believe that this impact is negative. Despite the positive things that social media has introduced, social media has also caused issues in mental health in teens. According to a Help Guide article on mental health with social media, "10 percent of teens report being bullied on social media." Bullying can lead to a serious deterioration in mental health. Humans as a soecies also need to be social, face to face, but social media doesn't fully allow that. This all shows that, despite some advantages, social media can lead to mental health issues.

Elliot, I agree with your response overall; however, social media has also helped people with poor mental health receive the support and resources that they need. There are many platforms and online campaigns dedicated to mental wellness which can be utilized to aid those with mental illnesses.

For instance, Instagram, a leading social media company, launched an online mental health campaign called "#HereForYou" in 2017. The main intention of the campaign was to spread awareness regarding mental health.

According to ABC News, the campaign was used to share first hand accounts of experiences of those who are currently experiencing mental illness, or those who have experienced it in the past. #HereForYou provided a greater support system for those experiencing mental illness, with a further outreach than in the in-person world.

Social media has been around for many decades and has changed out lives immensely. But has social media changed our lives for a greater good? While there are negative aspects of social media, the positive effects outweigh the negative.

For example, in criminal cases that involve kidnappings and trafficking, social media has made it possible for individuals to share information which aids in the search for victims.

Social media has also spread awareness over several political and social issues. For instance, the Russian-Ukrainian war has gained international support largely due to the circulation of information on social media platforms such as Instagram and Twitter.

Although the internet as a whole has helped connect the world, social media itself has had an overall negative effect on the world. As seen in a study by ScienceDaily, symptoms of depression and anxiety notably improve with a decrease in social media use. For instance, suicide rates in the United States have been steadily increasing for the past decade with a heavy influence from a lack of life satisfaction caused by social media. This proves that social media deteriorates mental health and is often shown to be a considerable factor in low life satisfaction, poor health, and suicidal behaviors.

Social media completely transformed the world. It has modified how people interact and connect on a global level. Social media has been extremely useful, but social media has also had a negative influence. Social media holds harmful influences on many, particularly young teens. Teenagers do immature and impulsive things regardless: Teenagers who are active on social media are at higher risk of depression, suicidal thoughts, and thoughts of self-harm. Social media is also linked to lower self-esteem due to beauty standards or cyberbullying. Overall, social media has its benefits, but with the damages make social media a bad influence.

Despite the connectivity the internet and social media provide, the over-all impact of social media has been a negative one because of increased screen time and lowered self esteems. According to the New York Times, the use of tables and phones has increased significantly in the past few years due to the pandemic and using social media to fill time; this even being the case for children younger than eight. By using media apps to social and connect with others, we spend less time in the real world and more in the digital world, causing us to lose sleep and touch with what's around us. The more time spent online, the more likely a person is to develop body dysmorphia due to how easy it is to compare one's self to that of others online. Influencers like the Kardashians have set a precedent for unachievable body standards, making people feel bad for not being able to live up to these standards. Social media as a whole has made the world more connected place but has increased the amount of time we spend on our phones and worsened the amount of people who experience body image issues such as body dysmorphia.

Although social media has contributed to the many changes in culture and caused some advancements, social media has a negative effect on the world because it causes issues on your mental health and contributes to a poor self esteem. For example, just like any other addiction in the world, social media, can cause many issues on your mental health like anxiety and depression. According to the Pew Research Center, 69% of adults and 81% of teens use social media, which puts a large amount of the population at a risk of feeling anxious or depressed because of social media (https://www.mcleanhospital.org/essential/it-or-not-social-medias-affecting-your-mental-health). Social media causes many people to overthink and feel judged or even unsafe because of the many people you don't know or are envious of. Social circles are also made through social media which in some cases can be positive, but in most, negative as it causes discrimination. Discrimination is seen as one of the worlds biggest problem and it's root cause is social media because it causes people to feel lonely and isolated which in the end causes low self esteem. Seeing the life of others can also cause low self-esteem because a people may have a completely different life compared to those on social media, it causes people to feel insecure and wishing they had that persons life.
